Elderly woman severely burned in St. Charles house fire

(KMOV) – An elderly woman is in critical condition after firefighters found her in front of her burning St. Charles home.

The 81-year-old woman suffered severe burns when a fire destroyed her home at Tilbury and Droste in St. Charles.

The St. Charles fire department was called to a report of an explosion at a duplex on Tilbury Lane just after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

When they arrived, they found that the home was fully engulfed in flames and a woman was lying in the front yard.

Authorities say that the woman discovered the fire and went to a neighboring unit for help. The landlord was in that unit. He and the woman went into the burning unit and tried to put out the flames using pans of water from the kitchen. The flames continued to spread and both the woman and the landlord had to jump out of the front door and into the yard.

The landlord was treated on at the scene. The woman remains in the burn unit at St. John's Mercy Medical Center.

No word yet on what caused the blaze.
