Former Mo. veterans worker gets 3 years probation

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A former employee of the Missouri Veterans Commission has been sentenced to three years probation for an embezzlement scheme.

The U.S. attorney's office said 33-year-old Stacy Griffin-Lowery, of Holts Summit, also was ordered Friday to complete 200 hours of community service and repaid $90,191 -- the full amount that was taken from the Veterans Commission.

The U.S. attorney's office says she pleaded guilty to misapplication of Veterans Commission money. An indictment had alleged she embezzled money from 2005 to 2008 that had been intended to benefit veterans living in nursing homes.

Griffin-Lowery pleaded guilty in state court in 2008 to misdemeanor theft and repaid the Veterans Commission $17,665. Auditors discovered the additional missing money soon after that.
