(KMOV) – More students are walking to school this year in the Bayless School District because of no bus service.
Parents say that the walk to Bayless Middle School is dangerous because there aren’t enough crossing guards at busy intersections.
The district says no one has applied for the crossing guard position ever since one of the guards quit recently.
Every child in the district walks to school now, and anyone who lives south of I-55 has at least three busy intersections to cross.
The district authorized the hiring of four guards, and has a hard time keeping them. The job pays minimum wage, and only offers two hours of work each day.
One crossing guard says it’s a shame no one wants the job, especially when jobs are hard to come by.
Parents say they hope it doesn’t take an accident for them to prove their point.
