WASHINGTON PARK, Ill. (AP/KMOV) -- Police in southern Illinois say a man who appeared to be stealing copper hit a live wire and was electrocuted.
Washington Park police say a man was found electrocuted early Saturday. Wire cutters and copper wire were found near his body.
Police also say this is a recent trend in Illinois. Granite City, Venice, Brooklyn, Washington Park and Belleville have all reported attempted copper thefts.
Police say the accident caused power outages across the area. Ameren says more than 500 customers without power early Saturday.
