It seems that I am in the minority on this one but I think that all Cardinals fans who are in up in arms about the Cardinals A) Not having a closer, B) Not having another starter, C) Not having a second baseman not named Kennedy, D) Not spending enough money, need to settle down.
We are still two months away from spring training and if you haven't been paying attention let me let you in on a little secret.....All Major League Baseball teams are scared to spend money right now because of the economy. There is a reason names like Manny Ramirez, Mark Texiera, A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, Rafael Furcal, Adam Dunn are all available at this point. I suspect by mid-February they will all have contracts with someone, so there is still plenty of time for the market to be set and all the free agents to be signed. So I understand why the Cardinals are being a little slow in spending money right now.
What I don't get about the Cardinals right now is the willingness to spend 30 million dollars on a closer when they have Chris Perez and Jason Motte waiting in the wings. I know the Cardinals season blew up because of their bullpen last year but why not take the risk with one of these young guys and spend the money on another quality starter? Chris Carpenter can not be counted on and they need another arm on the front end of the rotation. Why not take chance and if the closer by youngster approach fails you can go out and overpay for a closer in the middle of the season in trade. Don't overpay for a closer on the front end.
If the Cardinals roster looks the way it does now on February 1st then I will be concerned. We are still a week and a half before Christmas so just relax and let the market settle itself out.
