A league MVP is a guy who delivers on the field. A team MVP is a guy who delivers on the field and in the locker room. Albert Pujols showed his MVP mettle today by quelling the All Star controversy. The last thing the Cardinals needed was any sort of rift heading into the second half of the season. Albert closed the door on any such controversy today. Fans will continue to talk about it but the Cardinals need to focus on playing better baseball and Albert's comments will help keep the focus on the on-field product.
Marc Bulger called me back today and let me know he doesn't want his recent comments on satelite radio to be a distraction for him or the team. He absolutely plans to report to camp on time. He still wants a long term deal and would love to finish his career here. Unfortunately, sometimes an athlete or coach gets burned simply by answering a media inquiry honestly. That's the case here. I'd bet my last dollar the Rams and Bulger agree to a new deal sooner rather than later. You don't let Pro Bowl quarterbacks in their prime walk. And, with Scott Linehan establishing a power running game and improving the offensive line, Bulger will continue to get better and better. And, he's already one of the top three q-b's in the NFC according to his peers who voted him to the Pro Bowl last season.
Rams Prez John Shaw tells me the organization has been working on a deal for some time and will continue to work on signing Bulger. Shaw calls it the team's "number one priority right now." He says he believes the team has made a fair offer to Bulger. For what it's worth, he says he'd be suprised if Bulger was a holdout in two weeks and is confident that a long term deal will be completed.
