Today the Mayor of East St. Louis announced major cuts to the city's staff. The bulk of the cuts, 13, will be to the city's fire department. A question that arose in the press conference and later here in the newsroom is the decision to rely heavily on mutual aid. Traditionally, mutual aid is a practice reserved for extreme fires and cities like St. Louis, Washington Park and Centreville respond. Currently East St. Louis has 12 fire fighters working per shift in 4 different fire houses. With the cuts, the city will operate 3 fire houses and have 9 firemen on duty per shift.
Let me know what you think.
