I talked to a 12-year old boy and his family tonight... Corey Branam is a 7th-grader at Hazelwood West Middle School. His family invited me over to talk about what happened to him on his bus coming home from school Tuesday... the same day the world got a look at the bus camera video from Belleville.
Corey is a quiet kid... a little kid (weighs about 60 pounds)... in other words he's a "bully magnet."
"He's been bullied for a long, long time and I'm just trying to get it to stop," his mother Amy Branam told me.
Corey says on Tuesday it started with name calling. Then a couple of kids started hitting him in the head, face and "lower" as he put it.
Like with the Belleville deal, it sounds like the bus driver did nothing. Corey says he got off at a stop before his own stop, just so he could get away from the kids. They got off the bus with him and after a little more harrassment, they went their way and Corey walked home.
A spokesperson for Hazelwood Schools tells me they're looking at the bus camera video and will determine soon what if any punishment should take place for those who allegedly assaulted Corey. They say they take this sort of thing very seriously.
Corey's parents say they've taken him off the bus until they feel it's safe for him to ride it. They say this isn't fair. The bad kids should be off the bus, not Corey.
We'll see what happens.
