I've covered a lot of unusual stories, but this one is right up there. Three young men floating on the Meramec River isn't unusual... but the fact that their "vessel" was a septic tank is. Sunday night, they put in about 5pm, and missed their exit point because they couldn't make it to shore. Eureka firefighters, aided by police, an off duty Kirkwood firefighter, and arch helicopter (providing light) rescued the trio about 10pm. 5 hours and 20 miles of river later. Glad everyone is ok. What did the young men do wrong? No life jackets, insufficient steering mechanism, on flooded river... at night.... in a septic tank. They were lucky.
