The fatal crash of two news helicopters this week in Phoenix is spurring some discussion in the business as to whether we should even cover car chases. This hits close to home because the fatal crash in Phoenix involved KTVK, our sister station in the Belo Corporation. I didn't know either of the men from KTVK who were killed, but we send up crews in our helicopter every day, so it makes you nervous. Police in Phoenix are talking about charging the suspect in connection with the deaths, which I'm sure his attornies will dispute in court. There are those who say this should be a wakeup call for the industry to stop chasing every car chase, and that heliopters should be put to better use. Here's the Alan Mutter blog link:
