Former VA hospital employee warned management of bad sanitation procedures

(KMOV) – A former employee at the Cochran Veterans Affairs Medical Center in St. Louis claims she warned there were problems sterilizing medical equipment.

That hospital is now telling 1,800 dental patients that they might be at risk for HIV and Hepatitis.

Earline Johnson says she feels bad for the anguish those patients may be going through. Johnson says she tried to correct things that to her didn’t seem right when it came to cleaning medical instruments.

Johnson is no longer an employee at the VA hospital. She says she was fired in November 2009. She worked in the department in charge of sterilizing medical equipment.

She did keep copies of the emails and communications she sent to her supervisors about improving sterilization and making things safer for patients.

Johnson claims there were too many shortcuts and no desire to change any procedures.

So far, there has been no comment from the VA hospital on her claims.
