(KMOV) – Sheriff Robert J. Hertz of Madison County, Illinois is warning county residents to beware of fraudulent telemarketers.
A phone campaign is fraudulently using the name of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association to solicit donations.
Hertz advises that the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association never solicits by phone, only through mail in Illinois endorsed by the Sheriff.
If a telemarketer wants you to “act immediately” or offers an “amazing prize” it’s most likely a scam. Never give out personal information over the phone like social security or credit card numbers unless you have initiated the contact.
When dealing with telemarketers you have the right to ask:
-The name, address and phone number of the organization soliciting donations
-The name, address and phone number of the telemarketing firm
-The percentage of every dollar paid to the telemarketing firm
-Insist on something in writing before making a pledge
If you have any doubts or feel pressured, hang up.
