Alton man pleads guilty to child porn charges

(KMOV) -- An Alton man has pleaded guilty to three charges involving child pornography.

Thomas E. Lowery, 68, pleaded guilty to possession and receipt of child pornography and possession of obscene materials Wednesday.

Three federal undercover investigations between August 19, 2008 and November 24, 2008 revealed Lowery was offering to share files containing images of child pornography through the file-sharing computer program Limewire.

A federal search warrant was obtained and executed on April 22, 2009. Authorities found an external hard drive that contained approximately 4,200 images and 150 video files containing images of child pornography, many of which contained images of children who had not yet reached the age of 12.

The hard drive also contained approximately 230 images of bestiality involving both adults and children. A review of the computer hard drive revealed that there were approximately 1,352 files containing child pornography in the defendant's shared folder which had been used with programs like Limewire.

Lowery admitted possession of the images and videos found on the hard drives. He stated that all of his child pornography had been downloaded using Limewire.

His sentencing is scheduled for September 17 in East St. Louis.

Possession of child pornography carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine and lifetime parole. Receipt of child pornography carries a penalty of 5 to 20 years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine and lifetime parole. Possession of obscene materials carries a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine and up to 3 years parole.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force.
