By now, we all know that annual mammograms are key to catching breast cancer early. And starting this weekend, a local hospital is making it easier to get them.
St. John's Mercy's "Mamm Van" drives to West County mall Saturday for the "Mamm & Glam" event between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Inside, it's equipped with the same digital mammography machine you'd find inside a hospital. The difference is that the van travels, reaching the inner city and other under-served areas where women are less likely to get mammograms. No mammograms will be given on the van tomorrow, but it's a chance to check the van out first hand.
"See what the equipment looks like, that way you have a chance to see that it's not so scary. We're going to have some of our technologists out there, so you'll get to see our friendly faces, and we'll also have nurses out there, so if you have any breast questions, you are certainly free to ask any questions," Dr. Kerri Dias of St. John's Mercy says.
The "glam" part of the event continues inside the mall with beauty experts on hand with free makeovers and samples. While you're there, you can also schedule a mammogram. St. John's Mercy says cost should never be a reason to skip a mammogram. The hospital and many others offer free screenings to those in need.
