Scott Air Force Base safe after white, powdery substance found inside letter

(KMOV) -- Scott Air Force Base has been declared safe after emergency responders tested a mystery substance found on the base Thursday morning.

According to the Scott Air Force Base website, hazmat, fire and medical teams responded to building 1961 after a secretary opened a letter addressed to a senior leader. When the secretary opened the letter, a white powdery substance was found inside. The secretary called for help.
 
Emergency responders declared the substance to be negative for hazardous material.
 
As the teams investigated the incident, portions of the building were evacuated.
 
The building was declared safe at 11:00 a.m. The substance found will continue to undergo further testing while the Office of Special Investigations looks into the incident.
