(KMOV) -- A three-year-old is dead after what St. Louis police are calling an accidental shooting.

The shooting happened around 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday in the 4200 block of S. 38th Street in south St. Louis.

Police have identified the victim as Brandon Tate.

Brandon's mother tells police that she and a friend saw Brandon walk into a hallway from another room and collapse. They went to help him and realized that he had been shot in the chest.

A .38 caliber gun had reportedly been left in a back bedroom, and was within reach of the three-year-old boy. Authorities believe he may have been playing with the gun when he accidentally shot himself.

Authorities say Brandon's mother took him to St. Alexius Brothers Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A neighbor tells News 4 that the family with two children moved into that home less than two months ago, and there had been a shooting there in April supposedly involving a masked gunman.

The investigation into this case is ongoing.

No word yet on whether or not there will be any charges in this shooting.
