Collinsville: Man charged for false personation of police officer

(KMOV)-- A man was charged for trying to personate a police officer in Collinsville.

Authorities said a Sheriff's deputy saw a disturbance occurring on the parking lot of the Moto Mart Gas Station in the 700 block of North Bluff Road. The deputy 50-year-old Paul Cornwell assaulting another person in a vehicle. Cornwell saw the deputy approaching and gave the indication he was going to flee in his vehicle.


The victim told police Cornwell had just assaulted him because he asked Cornwell to close a door on his vehicle so he could drive by. The victim asked Cornwell to close the door and Cornwell became angry. Cornwell cursed at the victim and threw wadded towels at him.

The victim indicated that he was going to call the police. Cornwell told the victim, "the police are already her." The victim asked Cornwell if he was a police office and Cornwell told him that he was. Cornwell then saw the deputy and got in his vehicle and attempted to leave.


Cornwell was taken to the Madison County Jail where he was held pending formal charges. Cornwell was also issued misdemeanor charges for Disorderly Conduct and Battery.
