(KMOV) – Police are looking for thieves who destroyed an archaeology dig in the middle of a cornfield on the SIUE campus.
Officials say they are not sure how the thieves spotted the site as it is barely visible from the road.
Police say crooks pried open a tool box and stole about $200 worth of survey equipment and tools to sift dirt.
They also stole shovels and used them to dig their own holes at the site, wrecking the work of the SIUE archaeology students.
Campus police are increasing patrols in the area.
The students were digging for charcoal and pollen samples as part of an archaeology field class.
