(KMOV) – Some homeowners in Lincoln County have learned that they will be paying 10 to 20 percent more in property taxes.
Assessment notices have increased for older homes, and the county assessor says many homes that are more than 20 years old were unfairly assessed at low rates. A new system is supposed to level out those low assessments.
“I understand everybody is pretty upset by it. It wasn't any vindictive malice or any kind of object to raise revenue by any means,” says Lincoln County Assessor Kevin Bishop. “This is just the nature of the beast I have to deal with every two years.”
Bishop adds that this new system is starting to be used in other counties. And on the other hand, it does lower assessments for newer homes.
