ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – A recent spike in car break-ins can be blamed on criminals looking for guns, and if your car is parked in a packed lot or garage, thieves may strike.
Police say one in every five guns recovered by the St. Louis Police Department has been stolen, and a large percentage of those guns come from car break-ins.
The number of car break-ins typically goes up in the summer when there are sporting events and other occurrences downtown.
To combat theft, police say motorists should consider investing in a safe that can be bolted to one’s trunk. The safes are difficult to break into, and are good pieces of equipment for anyone who wants to make sure their valuables won’t be stolen. The cost for a safe is about $40.
The safes do not guarantee a thief won’t break into your car, but they are a strong deterrent.
