Homeless man charged after viewing child pornography at area college

(KMOV) – A 28-year-old homeless man was sentenced to 90 days in prison for possessing child pornography.

Thomas M. Smith was also sentenced to 20 years of supervised release and fined $600 for downloading child pornography images to his MP3 player from a computer at Southwestern Illinois College.

A public safety officer saw Smith viewing child pornography on a public computer at the school’s library.  As the officer approached Smith, he attempted to close the webpage he was viewing and unplugged two MP3 players that were connected to the computer.

Smith admitted to downloading child pornography to one of the MP3 players.

A forensic review on one of the MP3 players revealed around 165 images of child pornography which included children under the age of 12.

Smith told authorities he used the school’s computers once or twice a week and downloaded all of the images of child pornography from those computers.
