Clothes burnt off of likely copper thief in the Metro East

(KMOV) – A man in Alton, Illinois was found badly burned, bleeding and naked near an Ameren IP substation. Police believe the man was attempting to steal copper.
He was discovered around 7:45 p.m. on Sunday near the substation on Cut Street in Alton. Three people who were driving in the area to check on property tell police that the man was screaming for help.
The man was taken to Alton Memorial Hospital and was later flown to St. Louis for further medical treatment.
According to the Madison County sheriff’s office, the evidence at the scene suggests that the man was trying to steal copper wire from the substation when he was electrocuted. It is believed that the man was naked because his clothes were blown off due to the shock.
