ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – A 21-year-old man was killed Wednesday morning while riding in a car that slammed into a tree.

The crash happened at 12:15 a.m. near Labadie Avenue and Sarah Street in north St. Louis.

According to authorities, an Oldsmobile Aurora was travelling eastbound on Labadie at a high rate of speed. The 24-year-old driver lost control and struck a tree and an unoccupied parked car.

Demetrius Miller of the 4600 block of Richard Place was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was taken to an area hospital where doctors indicated he was stable.

Police believe speed played a role in the accident because the driver said the two were being chased by another vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing.
