(KMOV) – A charcoal barbecue grill may be to blame for a fire that heavily damaged a home in St. Charles on Tuesday night.
Flames broke out around 9:00 p.m. in a two-story house in the 500 block of Houston St. When firefighters arrived, the rear of the home was fully engulfed.
Two people were inside the home at the time, but managed to escape injury thanks to a neighbor. The residents told fire officials that their neighbor saw the flames and started banging on their door to tell them the house was on fire.
It took 30 minutes for firefighters to get the blaze under control. They were able to keep the fire from spreading to other nearby homes. One neighboring house had some minor exterior damage from the heat of the flames.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the St. Charles fire department says it appears the fire started on a rear deck. The homeowner told fire officials that he had been using a charcoal grill on the deck about an hour before the fire started. Damage to the home is estimated to be near $80,000.
Firefighters say the heat made it difficult to battle the flames. One firefighter was treated on the scene for a heat-related illness.
