Quinn defends appointment of former legislator

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is defending his choice of an ex-lawmaker for a $94,000 board post. The Democrat says former Rep. Mike Smith is "a friend" with a long record of working on education in the statehouse. Quinn tapped the 45-year-old Smith for the Educational Labor Relations Board. Smith lost election to a ninth term last fall. Quinn says he naturally thought of Smith when a position opened up on the labor board because Smith was a schools expert in the House. The Senate must confirm Smith's appointment. He would make 20 percent more than he did as a lawmaker. Quinn dropped the appointment of another ex-legislator to a different board in March after news reports said she had voted for Quinn's proposed income tax increase after initially opposing it.
