ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A state judge has struck down a law allowing St. Louis firefighters to live outside the city limits.
In his decision, Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem said the Missouri Constitution protects a city's authority to make residency decisions for its employees.
St. Louis has long had residency requirements for most of its employees.
The Missouri Legislature passed a bill last year to give firefighters the right to live outside the city -- as long as they were within an hour of their fire station. The city challenged the law as a violation of its authority. The city said only local voters could change residency requirements by amending the city charter.
