(KMOV) –A Georgia congressman is raffling off a gun to his supporters but its his choice in the prize that’s causing controversy.
Representative Paul Broun is offering his supporters the chance to win an AR-15, the same rifle used in the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.
Broun said the tragedy has nothing to do with why he’s offering this weapon.
Georgia Rep. Paul Broun has decided the time has come for him to corner the Second Amendment market in the GOP race for U.S. Senate. He's giving away an AR-15, the semi-automatic version of the U.S. military's M16.
“There’s no connection between what has happened in the past, what I am doing is focusing on the fact that I’m fighting for people’s constitutionally protected rights.”
Broun is a native of Georgia, and has served in congress since 2007. He hopes to become the state’s next senator.
