(KMOV.com) – Ameren was working to restore power to thousands of Missouri and Illinois customers after high winds caused outages and damaged homes throughout the St. Louis area Sunday night.

Ameren initially reported more than 8,000 St. Louis-area customers had lost power.

But that that number dropped to just over 1,600 by Monday morning.

In Missouri, most of the power outages were reported in the Oakville and Washington areas. But only about 600 customers on the Missouri side were without power by about 10 a.m.

Ameren Illinois reported the majority of outages were in Swansea, Belleville, Greenville and Fairview Heights. Power had been restored to most Metro-East residents by Monday morning.

The high winds toppled trees, trash cans and damaged homes and businesses. The extent of the damage was not immediately available.

For updated numbers, go to the Ameren Missouri or Ameren Illinois websites.
