(KMOV) – Police are searching for a suspect who discovered a child in hiding while burglarizing a Webster Groves home on Jan. 16.
According to authorities, the suspect had been knocking on doors in the neighborhood and offering to clean gutters.
The 12-year-old who lived at the home had come home from school and left the door open. When the suspect encountered the open door, he walked into the home and asked if anyone was present. The child was frightened, so he hid the garage.
Not hearing a response, the suspect proceeded to steal electronics and jewelry from the home. While moving through the residence, he entered the garage and encountered the child.
The 12-year-old opened the garage and fled to a neighbor's house. The neighbor ran back to the home and encountered the suspect in the back yard fleeing on foot.
The suspect, who is described as a white man in his mid-30s with an athletic build wearing a grey hoodie, was able to escape.
The child was unharmed. Police are investigating the crime.
