(FootballStL) – The extra point could be facing extinction. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke with Rich Eisen on Monday, and revealed the league is mulling the possibility of eliminating the PAT.

“The extra point is almost automatic,” the commissioner told Eisen. “We had five missed extra points this year out of 1,200 some odd (attempts).”

The proposal Goodell discussed on NFL Total Access is one that has been heard before, and has support from many non-traditionalists.

“It’s automatic that you get seven points when you score a touchdown, but you could potentially go for an eighth point, either by running or passing the ball. So if you fail, you go back to six,” Goodell said.

The idea would be to eliminate the chance associated with kicking the extra point, and put coaches to a decision as to whether they want to risk the guaranteed point for a chance at another.

The idea is a loose proposal at this point, but could provide some intriguing twists.
