Snow, ice create trouble for St. Louis-area drivers

( – Another round of snow hit the St. Louis area overnight, creating icy conditions that caused a number of wrecks around the region.

Snow fell throughout the News 4 viewing area, leaving some portions of the region with as much as two inches.

The bigger issue was the ice, which caused several wrecks around the St. Louis area as winds were gusting up to 35 mph.

Accidents also snarled traffic on interstates 55, 44, 64 and 70.

Southbound Interstate 55 was shut down at the Bayless exit after a tanker truck hit a snow plow. Two lanes of eastbound Interstate 64 were closed near Kingshighway due to another wreck.

Two wrecks were also reported on eastbound Interstate 70 near Kingshighway, forcing officials to close two lanes of traffic.

On Interstate 44, two left westbound lanes were shut down after two vehicles collided near Antire Rd.

Becky Allmeroth with the Missouri Department of Transportation said they were working at least 10 wrecks at one point. 

MetroBus also had some delays and officials were telling riders to allow extra time for the morning commute.

The utility company Ameren Missouri reported about 5,900 outages, mostly in the St. Louis area and the Missouri Bootheel.

Temperatures throughout the day are expected to be in the teens, though it will feel between minus-5 and 5 degrees. Those low temps will stick around through the evening.

Wednesday will be a bit warmer, though temperatures will barely reach the low 30s.
