ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) -- Several school districts in northern Illinois are using GPS technology to track buses and students getting on and off.

The technology is being used in Rockford and Freeport to improve safety and the efficiency of getting children to and from schools.

The Rockford Register Star reports that district officials are using the data to analyze routes for speed and idle times and to determine whether drivers are getting to stops on time.

Children swipe electronic cards as they get on and off, and that’s allowed dispatchers to tell worried parents where their kids are with the click of a mouse.

The Rockford School District installed $350,000 worth of GPS technology in 272 buses last year.

It also allows dispatchers to see if a bus is stranded by bad weather.
