(KMOV) – A local man continues to wait for his vehicle title after buying a truck from a north St. Louis County car dealership.

Clifford Coats bought the 10-year-old truck from Alex Auto Plex on St. Charles Rock Rd. in May, 2013, yet still cannot do anything with it.

“We can’t drive it, can’t sell it,” he said. “We just have to look at it, so it’ll sit here ‘til we end up getting something resolved.”

Coats can’t get the truck registered because he can’t get the title, even though he bought the vehicle with cash.

The dealer said he didn’t have the title but promised to get it to him “in a matter of days.” That was seven months ago.

News 4 visited the dealership and the man who answered to the name “Alex” admitted there was a problem and offered to take care of it immediately:

He told News 4 he bought the car off Craigslist and the seller was to blame for all the problems. It appears that was a lie.

It turns out Alex Auto Plex bought the truck from J. Higgs auto auction house in St. Louis in November, 2012.

In a lawsuit, Higgs claims “Alex” bought 11 vehicles, paying for them with checks that bounced like rubber balls.

It’s against the law, as it’s illegal in Missouri to sell a car without a title.

Higgs is suing “Alex” for $100,000 in actual and punitive damage. News 4 will continue to stay on top of the case.
