Jury deliberates for 12 minutes, finds Belleville man guilty of hate crime

(KMOV)--A Belleville man was found guilty of hate crime on Thursday according to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney.

St. Clair County State’s Attorne,y Brendan F. Kelly, stated that Cory A. Houghlan was found guilty of hate crime for an incident that occurred in Mascoutah, Illinois on August 2, 2009. 

The verdict was returned this morning in front of a Judge only twelve minutes of deliberation by the jury.

Witnesses testified at trial that they observed Houghlan strike an African American man in the face with his hand while repeatedly yelling racial slurs. This incident occurred on the parking lot of the Handee Mart.

Authorities say that  Houghlan, attacked a man who was “minding his own business”.

A sentencing hearing has been set for February 24th.  Houghlan faces a sentencing range of between one to three years in prison. He is also eligible for up to 30 months of probation.
