ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A St. Louis man is both charged with a crime and recovering from injuries after being shot while allegedly trying to steal copper.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 23-year-old Brandon Beckless is charged with burglary and property damage, and jailed on $25,000. He did not yet have an attorney.

Police say Beckless was shot twice in the leg Tuesday night while burglarizing a home to steal copper pipes in the basement. A 41-year-old man living in the home woke up when he heard the noise and shot the burglar during a struggle over the gun.

A second burglar was also in the home, and remains at large.
