Man found dead in burned home on New Years Eve, police now ruling as homicide

(KMOV) – A man whose body was discovered during a New Year’s Eve fire is now being ruled as a homicide.

An autopsy performed Monday revealed that the man who was found in a burned out home was killed by blunt trauma to the head.

The victim is identified as 36-year-old Charles Ward.

The fire broke out in a home along the 3800 block of Cottage between Dr. Martin Luther King Drive and St. Louis Avenue around 6 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.

Firefighters discovered the body of the man on the second floor of the home. It appears he was killed before the fire started.

Neighbors along the block say the man was recently trying to fix the house. They also say they suspect there’s more to the story and how he died.

Police say they still have not been able to identify the man killed, but neighbors are certain it is the homeowner.

Police also say there are still no suspects.
