MAYWOOD, Ill. (AP) -- The Cook County Sheriff's department says its officers arrested seven people last week in a raid on a dogfight in the basement of a house in the Chicago suburb of Maywood.
Sheriff Tom Dart says Monday the officers were preparing to execute a search warrant at the home last Thursday when they spotted a man entering with a pit bull on a leash.
The investigators then surrounded the house and went inside, where they found two pit bulls fighting. After forcibly separating them, authorities removed the dogs and took them for immediate veterinary care.
A resident of the home has been charged with dogfighting, while four other Maywood residents and one man from Chicago have been charged with attending a dogfight. Police say charges are pending against a seventh person.
