(KMOV)-- Sixteen East St. Louis police officers will lose their jobs.
The City Council decided to lay off the officers because of budget problems.
The Belleville News Democrat reports the layoffs are effective as of Saturday.
The aldermen considered laying of 19 officers, but officials found a way to save money that would reduce the number.
The city will also lay off four public works employees and one full-time and part-time telecommunicator.
