SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Springfield aldermen have chosen an interim mayor to replace Mayor Tim Davlin, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Dec. 14.
In a meeting Tuesday evening, the Springfield City Council chose Alderman Frank Edwards as the interim mayor. Television station WICS reports Edwards was selected on a vote of 6-4. Edwards will serve until a new mayor is elected in April.
The law gives the council 60 days to select an interim mayor, but The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports that aldermen say they need someone in place sooner because of the serious budget issues the city is facing.
