Illinois hopes new law will cut down on speeding

Lawmakers in Illinois hope a new law that will take effect at the beginning of the year will stop drivers from excessive speeding.
Under the new law, speeders who go 40 miles over the posted limit will not be allowed to seek court supervision.
Court supervision gives drivers a way to avoid punishment for poor driving; the charge does not show up on a permanent record if the offender complies with other penalties.
In 2006, nearly half of drivers who were caught going over 100 miles an hour were ticketed and had to pay a fine, but were able to keep their licenses.
