FONDA, Iowa (AP) -- Authorities say a 64-year-old Missouri man may have been trying to rescue his dog when the man fell through thin ice and drowned in a pond in Fonda, Iowa.
Fonda Police Chief Alex Leu says the accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon at what is known locally as the Fonda Pit.
Officers called to the scene found footprints leading to a hole in the ice. Leu says evidence suggested that the man had gone onto the ice to help his dog, which had fall into the water.
Leu says there are signs warning of thin ice.
Leu identified the man as James Stacey, of Marshall, Mo. Leu says Stacey used to live in Fonda.
The dog was found inside a pickup near the pond.
