SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Springfield's City Council has scheduled a special meeting to select an acting mayor to replace Mayor Tim Davlin, who died last week.
The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports that the council will hold the special meeting Tuesday.
Alderman Frank Kunz has been mayor pro tem since Davlin's death. Kunz says he supports Alderman Mark Mahoney to serve until the spring election.
The council has 60 days to pick a new mayor.
Davlin died Dec. 14 from a close-range gunshot wound to the chest. His body was found by Springfield officers responding to a 911 call.
An autopsy indicated the 53-year-old Democrat fired the fatal shot himself.
Davlin had been mayor of the state's capital city since April 2003.
