St. Louis couple sentenced for health care fraud

(KMOV.com) – A St. Louis couple was sentenced today for creating and using false patient medical and billing documents and for submitting false reimbursement claims to Medicare from 2007 through 2009.

Sparks Stone, 37, and Keisha Stone, 35, each pled guilty in May to one felony count of health care fraud and four felony counts of making false statements concerning health care benefit programs.

The Stones established The Home Team Home Health Services, located on Michigan Avenue in St. Louis, to provide services to home-bound patients who needed nursing services or assistance with the activities of daily living.

The Stones recruited ineligible customers and falsely stated the patients were homebound.  The couple also submitted claims for patients whose physicians indicated they did not need the services and submitted claims for services that were not provided.

Sparks Stone was sentenced to 24 months in prison and Keisha Stone was sentenced to 5 years probation.  The couple was ordered to pay restitution of $103,711 to the Medicare Program.
