MASCOUTAH, Ill. (KMOV)—Three people were taken to a hospital after handling a suspicious package at Scott Air Force Base on Wednesday morning.

According to the Scott Air Force Base website, three people were taken to a hospital and 13 other people were decontaminated on site.  The suspicious package was delivered to the mail center in Building 1650 around 9:26 a.m.

Officials said, workers in the mail room found a chemical substance in the package and began breaking out with a rash. Crews were forced to shut down the mail center and evacuate the building.

The education center, bowling alley, Information Tickets and Tours office, Airman Family Readiness Center are closed until further notice. Hazmat crews remain on the scene to investigate.

Officials say the victims that were taken to the hospital have been treated and released.

Scott Air Force Base officials say there is no immediate threat to the community at this time.
