(KMOV) -- A vacant home was destroyed after a first-alarm fire broke out in north St. Louis, and spread to an occupied home late Tuesday evening.

The fire broke out at the home located in the 5700 block of Vernon just after 11:00 p.m.

Authorities say the fire spread to the second home where people were living shortly after the vacant home caught fire. Police are not saying if anyone in the occupied home was injured as a result of the fire at this time.

According to police there were two fires at vacant buildings in the same area just north of Highway 40 last week.

The recent fires have raised the suspicions of one north-side alderman who believes brick wranglers may be targeting vacant homes to steal bricks after the fires are put out.

Authorities do not have any information on who or what may have caused the current fire at this time.
