BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV) – The end of summer could also be the end of the Belleville swimming pool.

Last renovated in the 1970s, the pool has consistently lost the city around $10 thousand in the past several years. Now, the pool needs about $13 thousand in repairs.

An equipment problem last year was suspected of making swimmers sick, and now the state may be forced to take action at a hearing on September 20.
"If they would say we have to change the whole filtration system that could be extremely expensive. and that could make the decision of where we go from here,” said Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert. “At some point you have to look at it and go wow how many thousands can we afford?"
Newly elected Alderwoman Melinda Hult sees the situation clearly.
"I did say during the campaign if it came down to running a fire truck and running the pool we'd have to close the pool to keep the fire truck running," she said.
