(KMOV) – Prosecutors say a 23-year-old man was charged Thursday with impersonating a law enforcement officer.
The suspect, Mark Earls, allegedly pulled over an actual police officer who was off-duty on Interstate 55 in St. Louis County.
Officials say if you are ever pulled over and realize that you are dealing with someone who is not a real police officer, you should report the incident as quickly as possible.
Sergeant Al Nothum with the Missouri State Highway Patrol says that there are times when you may not want to stop. “Feel free to keep driving if you are in an area where you are being stopped and there is no light,” he says.
He also says in any traffic stop, be observant and get the important information like the officer’s name and the agency. “The best thing you can do is look at the vehicle, look at the officer [and] how he conducts himself,” says Nothum. If something is not right, it probably isn't – and you need to make some phone calls really quick
