NEW YORK (AP) -- A luxury SUV loved by the rich and the not-so-rich is also loved by thieves.
The Cadillac Escalade is now the most likely vehicle to be targeted by crooks.
The Highway Loss Data Institute says the Escalade, which starts at more than $63,000, is six times more likely to be hit by thieves than the average vehicle, and its overall theft losses are more than 10 times as large.
The study is based on insurance claims made for model years 2008 through 2010.
The institute's Matt Moore says the Escalade is stolen more often because "It's so wildly popular as far as pop culture goes." He says "It's a status symbol."
Pickup trucks are also a favorite of thieves. The Ford F-250 crew cab four-wheel drive is the second-most stolen vehicle, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab, the Ford F-450 crew cab four-wheel drive and the GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab.
