(KMOV) -- A 20-year-old man is dead after crashing his motorcycle while fleeing from deputies late Tuesday evening.

The fatal accident occurred at the intersection of Dingledine and Towers around 9:15 p.m.

Deputies say the driver of the motorcycle, John Gomez, passed a St. Charles County deputy traveling at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. As the officer began to pursue the motorcycle, Gomez lost control and crashed into a nearby power pole.

According to authorities, Gomez died at the scene of the accident.

The crash knocked out power to some residents in the area for a short time, but power has since been restored to those residents.

According to family members, Gomez left the United States Navy six months ago after being in for two years.

An investigation into this fatal accident is on-going.
