(KMOV) — Lincoln County Police have charged a Troy, Missouri man with the first degree murder of a 2-year-old boy.
According to police, Douglas Clayton Rivette, confessed to killing 2-year-old Demetrius Washington Jr. after his original story conflicted with evidence in the toddler’s death.
Rivette allegedly kicked Washington in the abdomen causing him to fall backwards, hitting his head on the closet door.
Washington was pronounced dead on Thursday after he was being treated for a head injury. At the time he was living with his mother, Melissa McKeage and her boyfriend, Rivette.
The suspect originally told investigators he tripped walking out of the house, struck Washington from behind, causing Washington to fall down the front porch steps.
Rivette has been charged with 1st Degree murder, abuse of a child - resulting in death, and armed criminal action. He is being held at the Lincoln County Jail with a $1,000,000 cash only bond set.
There were at least three previous reports of child abuse before last week’s murder.
“I contacted the child services in January and told [them] that when he was in my care, he came here with a bruised private area…I was told by his sisters that he was punched there for peeing on the bed,” says Dawn Richardson, daycare provider.
While the case was still active, DFS said they couldn’t comment on why they never removed Washington from the home. The Lincoln County Prosecutor’s Office said that deputies never thought there was enough evidence of abuse to bring charges.
